Hello. I'm guessing your name is Lane.

I'm mighty glad that I decided to pay a visit to my site this evening because I seldom go to it normally. Found this note from you. I then visited your site, "A Life in Letters." I very much like it, the letters from your dad. I was tickled to see both that he mentions Hammett and The Adakian, and that you included a link to my own blog site. Your father was a good writer. Very literate. Names of authors sprinkled here and there. I was intrigued to see in his letters a certain style that I also find in Hammett's own letters from Adak to his wife, daughters, girlfriend Lillian Hellman, and others. Your father signs off in a manner similar to Hammett's. Folks in their day could handle the written language better than most people can today. I look forward to reading more of what your father wrote. ... Incidentally, a minor point, but the link to my website, windblownanddripping.com, is not live, not hot, as they say. A visitor would have to copy the URL into a browser window to open it. But that's nothing. Thank you very much for including it. Best wishes--Peter Porco, Anchorage, AK

Mr. Porco-

I'd like to talk with you about the Adakian and your research on it. I'd like to make contact with the private collector you mention holding a nearly complete set. Email is the best way to get in touch with me. Thank you.

It totally amazes me, that small island could leave such an enduring and lasting positive affect. My experience on Adak taught me alot about myself, otherwise I probably would not have had the chance, too. Most people know exactly what I am talking about. Would I go back if given the opportunity, hell yeah!

Your topic is a good one, but I'm not sure what suggestions I can offer beyond what you must already know. For example, you probably have seen John Huston's "Report from the Aleutians," a 45-min. documentary made on Adak in 1943, prior to the Japanese evacuation of Kiska. It's well-made (it's John Huston, after all) and exceptional propaganda, which makes the Aleutians seem like happy camp. It seems as if Huston never saw a cloudy day there. Hammett's Adakian strongly supported the war, as you would expect, but I doubt it had a great influence other than to boost the soldiers' morale. ... Give me a better idea of what you're looking for and maybe I can come up with some other suggestions. ... I tried to send you a back-channel e-mail message, but your address doesn't seem to work; I got the bounce-back message "User unknown."

This is excellent! I'd love to see your play but am stuck in Fairbanks. I'm a grad student at UAF, and am doing a master's thesis involving Dashiell Hammett among others, discussing journalism, novels and propaganda in World War II. Any suggestions etc. you might have would be wonderful. So glad to see Hammett's Alaskan period suitably dramatized!
